50 states project

i have always been interested in why and how publications choose photographers to represent a generation, a genre, a style, or a state. today i saw on photo editor's blog a 50 states project that stuart pilkington has put together. the project consists of giving these photographers assignments to illustrate things about their state, the first one is:

"On 2nd January 2009 I set all 50 photographers within the project the same task. I asked them to photograph one or more individuals whom they felt represented the State where they live."

awesome. great concept. now, who would be photographed to best illustrate alabama? you guessed it, ruben studdard. yeah, remember that love-able, area code jersey wearing, media conglomerate created, soul singing dude? really? is that who represents the state that i call home? i hope not.

taylor is a friend of mine, and this isn't an attack on him, simply a critique. i want that to be understood. i am just frustrated with the choice subject and treatment in this case. i just think it's predictable and boring and ruben hasn't done anything in years.

i was really bummed when saw how alabama was being represented. there are so many amazing people on that site. alaska is one of my favorites. i love ben huff. i don't know taylor, but i feel like there were other photographers who would have represented the state much better.
